MORE WOMEN ENGINEERS: WHAT WE MUST DO ABOUT FEMALE ENROLLMENT IN STEM

STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. STEM is important because it spreads through every part of our lives. Technology is advancing and the world has gone digital. What then must we do about female enrolment in STEM? Due to the status quo placed on females in society and the classification based on some particular jobs meant for females and males.

Females do not see themselves performing well in STEM. Any female who overlooks the belief of the society and goes into STEM is seen as an irresponsible woman trying to compete with the male counterpart.

What must we do to correct the above notion and also to encourage the enrolment of females in STEM?

The world is evolving and the status quo placed on females is been lifted. Now, we can see a lot of female’s involvement in STEM. It is no longer classified as a man’s job. Due to the rapid increase in technology, more hands are needed which the female counterpart is not left out. They are encouraged to enroll in STEM and are accepted. They are no longer seen as irresponsible but are regarded as special and celebrated

Females need to be encouraged right from their immediate homes. Build their self-confidence and help them to overcome their fears. Females should be allowed to practice outdoor activities, play with their hands, and get themselves dirty. They should be allowed to mix with those experienced in STEM and also, ask questions.

Attention and focus should be placed on the females as it is done to the males. They should be guided and allowed to take on a specific subject to increase their knowledge of STEM. There is an adage that says, “what a man can do, a woman can do better”.  We are created equally and should be allowed to live our dreams
